Batsman Anmol Sharma, a 24-year-old hard-hitter hailing from East Delhi's Preet Vihar, hammered an unbeaten 109 off 86 balls (9x4s, 4x6s) to power Rajnigandha Cricket Club to semi-finals of the 40th Laxman Dass Memorial Cricket Tournament at the St Stephen's Ground in Delhi on Thursday.
Thanks to his century and Shubham Rohilla's 96 off 77 balls (9x4s, 4x6s), Rajnigandha defeated LB Shastri Cricket Club by six wickets.
Batting first, LB Shastri were restricted to 298/9 in 40 overs with Nitin Tanwar who earned the Fighter of the Match Award, scoring 93 off 73 balls (11x4s, 1x6). Wicketkeeper Mohit Ahlawat (49 off 31 balls) and Jonty Sidhu (46 off 34 balls) were the other scorers for LB Shastri.
But Sharma and Rohilla stuck around, adding 106 for the third wicket to take the team into a position of strength.
"One of our seniors, Shivam Singh, said that I should play 40 overs, and that won't let them come into the game," said Anmol Sharma to www.thedelhijunction.com after the match.
Anmol Sharma has been playing cricket for 15 years now and is representing Madras Cricket Club in the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) League this year. He used to represent Delhi Gymkhana earlier.
The right-handed batsman shot to limelight last year during the Delhi Premier League at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground when he won a Striker of the Match Award in a seven-over game, hitting 32 off 15 balls for West Delhi Lions.
He has captained Delhi under-16 and under-19 teams. He has also represented the Delhi state at under-23 and under-25 levels.
In the first quarterfinal of the tournament played on Wednesday, former Delhi Ranji Trophy spinner Varun Sood picked 5/30 as Sehgal Cricket Club defeated Pioneer Cricket Club by eight wickets.
Besides Sood's fifer, captain Sultan Ansari chipped in with a blazing 45 not out (4x4s, 2x6s), Rituraj Sharma made 35 not out and Subodh Bhati took 2/24 to help Sehgal Cricket Club made 118/2 in 16 overs. Pioneer Cricket Club were bowled out for 112 in 15 overs.
The tournament is part of Delhi cricket's Hot Weather Circuit.
