New Delhi: A pulsating contest that produced a result through penalty shootout for youthful Naval Tata brigade and an effortless victory for Rail Coach Factory (RCF), Kapurthala was the fare dished out on the second day of the SNBP 61st Nehru Senior hockey tournament at Shivaji Stadium on Saturday.
Trained by Dutch coaches, the sprightly Naval Tata Academy team trailing by an early goal drew level in third quarter. They did everything but score in the last session despite having a total sway over Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
In the penalty shootout, the winner was clinched by Mohammed Jaeed of Tatas 3-2 (overall tally 4-3).
Jaeed had earlier netted the equaliser in the regulation period and had converted a stroke that came team's way in the shootout because of blocking Amrit Horo by CISF goalkeeper.
Local Central Secretariat later were no match for RCF as they were blanked by five goals without reply.
Half-liner Surinder and winger Lovenoor Singh shared two goals each for winners, though best goal of the day came from Abhishek Gorkhi who found the net from an acute angle with a reverse flick. This was class apart.
Victory for young rookies of Naval Tata belonged to man of the match Mohammed Jaeed. He scored the equaliser in third quarter for Tatas, then converted a stroke given when CISF goalkeeper Silvestar Barla fouled in blocking Amrit Horo during the shootout. The score in penalty shootout out was 2-2 when Jaeed netted the match-winner on his attempt, fifth and last for the team.
Earlier, CISF had struck early in the first quarter with Atif Ateef following a goalmouth melee.
After slow paced hockey the match picked in third quarter with Naval Tata team doing everything but score. Amarjeet, Mangra Dohdray and Sam Munda made close calls but found Silvestar Barla under the CISF bar a hard nut to crack.
In the shootout, Aditya Chettri and Nithin and Vishal Rana missed their chances while Sandeep Kumar and Ankit Kumar Singh called correctly for the para military team.
For the winners from Jamshedpur, Mohit Naik and Jaeed (2) were successful. Jaeed first converted a penalty stroke earned by Amrit Horo and then was classic conversion of his own chance to clinch the decider.
For RCF Surinder's brace was punctuated by a classic from Abhishek Gorkhi before Lovenoor came up with two goals in the penultimate quarter.
RCF look things lightly in the last session for they have to play Naval Tata boys on Sunday. In the second match NCOE of SAI will take on PSB.
The highlight of the play on Sunday will be an exhibition match between Mayo College girls and Nehru XI from 4.30 pm onwards. Part of the match would be played under floodlights.
