As the Delhi cricket circuit gets ready for the upcoming Delhi Premier League (DPL), East Delhi Riders finally struck form and returned to winning ways.
The franchise, who are the defending champions at DPL, had lost the first two matches of the 50th Goswami Ganesh Dutt Memorial Cricket Tournament and crashed out. However, on Monday they restored pride with their opener Sujal Singh finally getting a big score at the St Stephen's College Ground.
Sujal had a couple of fifties in the DDCA League and also put up some good knocks in the Laxman Dass Memorial. He had started the season in style, scoring a double century against Saurashtra in the Col CK Nayudu Trophy. But after that big scores had eluded him. He got fifties, 40s and 30s though. But barring a century (off 50-odd balls) in a private tournament in Gurgaon (now Gurugram) which acted as preparation for many IPL players, a big knock eluded.
But against a strong Dwarka Warriors -- comprised of players from Bal Bhavan Cricket Academy -- he came good and slammed 98 off 46 balls (11x4s, 6x6s), adding 154 with Hardik Sharma (81 off 47 balls, 5x4s, 6x6s) for the second wicket. Thanks to that partnership, East Delhi Riders made 224/5 in the allotted 20 overs. They then restricted Dwarka Warriors to 206 all out in 19.5 overs, thereby losing by 18 runs. Karan Garg scored 50 off 28 balls (2x4s, 4x6s). Hrithik Shokeen hit 48 off 22 balls (5x4s, 4x6s).
"I have been scoring but yes somehow big scores haven't come as frequently as I would have liked," said Sujal.
"I am hoping to make a big impact," added the left-handed Sujal, who scored 285 runs in 10 matches at an average of 35.63 and a strike rate of 151.6.
In another match on Monday, batsman Anmol Sharma continued his good form, slamming 117 off 42 balls (11x4s, 9x6s) to help Madras Cricket club register a 64-run win over LB Shastri Coaching Centre.
Thanks to Anmol's ton, Madras CC made 278/5 in 20 overs. LB Shastri CC then were restricted to 214/7 in the allotted 20 overs.
Tejas Baroka picked 3/25 in four overs.
