The Delhi under-23 team thrashed Uttarakhand by a massive margin of 204 runs in the BCCI U-23 State A Trophy to move into third place in Group B and stay in contention for the knockout phase.

Opener Arpit Rana powered to 140 off 104 balls with 14 fours and six sixes while Ankit Kumar made 74 off 63 balls (6x4s, 5x6s). The two put on 138 for the first wicket in 18.4 overs.

Ayush Doseja, who walked in at No. 3, made 57 off 63 balls. He added 139 for the second wicket with Rana.

Skipper Hardik Sharma chipped in with 35 off 23 balls. Delhi ended with 381/7 in 50 overs.

Delhi then got rid of Uttarakhand in 38 overs, dismissing them for 177.

Left-arm spinner Rounak Waghela picked 6/27 in 10 overs.

Delhi need to win the last match against Haryana to qualify.

“Our aim was to make as much target as possible because our pool was a bit tough, so the net run rate would come into play. The idea was to play positively and convert the loose balls,” said Rana, who trains under Rajesh Nagar at Bal Bhawan in Dwarka and Pradeep Kochhar at Bharti College’s Airliner Cricket Academy, Janakpuri.

The 21-year-old left-hander had earlier scored 100 not out off 31 balls against Nagaland, hitting six sixes off six balls he faced. Delhi won that match by nine wickets.

Rounak Waghela took six wickets

Waghela said that the pitch was a bit helpful.

“The idea was to put the ball in the one right slot consistently. I tried to bowl an attacking line. The tournament has been going on well. We need to win the next match to qualify,” said Waghela who trains under Devdutt Baghel at the Venkateshwar Cricket Academy, Dwarka and Ashok Kumar at Harbeer Cricket Academy, Paschim Vihar.

The 17-year-old has picked 21 wickets in the tournament.

Delhi have now won five matches out of six and are placed on 20 points, the same as Andhra who are above them in second place due to better net run rate. Haryana are group leaders with 24 points, winning all six of their six matches.
