The East Delhi Riders cricketers in an act of benevolence came to the help of the family of a 17-year-old cricketer Eklavya Singh, who died on March 22 following an accident near Peeragarhi in West Delhi when his bike was reportedly hit by a moving car.
In a ceremony conducted by the East Delhi Riders management to honour the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) President Rohan Jaitley, skipper Himmat Singh pledged to donate Rs 1 lakh to the family of Eklavya Singh.
Rounak Waghela also pledged 50% of his match fees from the September 1 match to the family of Eklavya, who was part of the Delhi under-16 squad, and was on his way to a fitness session in the Bosco Public School in Paschim Vihar at around 5 am in the morning when the incident happened.
There were other donations from players and team management too.
Batsman Hardik Sharma donated 50% of his match fees from the September 1 match to the groundstaff in recognition of their efforts in maintaining the ground facilities.
Eklavya Singh died on March 22 in an accident
Sujal Singh donated 50% of his match fees to support daily wage workers who work relentlessly behind the scenes.
East Delhi Riders management has pledged to donate Rs 2.5 lakh to Arya Bal Griha NGO, dedicated to supporting underprivileged children.
Riders also donated Rs 1 lakh to the Krishna Ratan Sports Academy, which looks to nurture young sports talent.
“I think it is just the beginning. I think we will see the same with the other franchises. I am thankful to the East Delhi Riders franchise for all the initiative that they have taken,” said Jaitley while addressing the gathering.
