New Delhi: Holi, the festival of colors, is one of the most joyful and vibrant celebrations in India. Streets fill with laughter, music, and clouds of bright gulaal as people come together to spread happiness and love. It is a time of unity, fun, and unforgettable memories.
But while we celebrate with colors and sunshine, our skin quietly faces exposure to harsh chemicals, strong sunlight, and dryness. The vibrant powders and water splashes that make Holi so exciting can sometimes leave behind irritation, tanning, or dullness if we don’t prepare properly.
That’s why skincare becomes just as important as the celebration itself. With a little care and the right products, you can enjoy Holi freely while keeping your skin healthy, protected, and glowing. After all, true beauty shines brightest when it is cared for with love. Here’s how you can do that the right way.
Start with a clean face
Before applying anything else, wash your face gently to remove excess oil, dirt, or sweat. This helps create a clean base and makes it easier to wash off colors later. Try a mild cleanser like Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser which is good for sensitive skin. Or you an also go with Simple Refreshing Face Wash that is gentle on skin and free of harsh chemicals.

Moisturise, moisturise, moisturise
This is the most important step! A well-moisturized face and body act like a barrier and make it harder for colors to stick deep into your skin. With Nivea Soft Light Moisturizing Cream your skin will feel light and hydrated. Other options include Vaseline Intensive Care Aloe Soothe Lotion which provide a protective and soothing effect on your skin or Avène Hydrance Aqua Cream - great for dry or sensitive skin.
Apply moisturiser generously on your face, neck, arms, and hands at least 30 minutes before heading out.
Use a barrier cream or cold cream
A barrier cream seals the moisture and gives extra protection against color stains. For Indian skin tone Ponds Cold Cream act as a thick barrier for dry skin is an affordable one. Other options include Lotus Herbals Almond Cool Cream which provide hydration plus light protection or you can also go along with Bio-Oil Skin Care Oil – great to apply on face and body before colors. Apply this over your moisturiser for better protection.

Don’t forget sunscreen!
Holi usually happens outdoors in bright sun. Sunscreen protects your skin from UV damage and helps prevent irritation. Use a sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Always use a good quality sunscreen. La Shield SPF 40 Gel which is used for broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection, especially for oily, acne-prone, or sensitive skin, Then we have Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch SPF 50+ suitable for various skin types, glide smoothly on the skin and also works as a primer and Re’equil Oxybenzone & OMC Free Sunscreen Lotion SPF30 which is long lasting and lightweight. Reapply every few hours if you’re outside for a long time.
Protect your lips and hair
Colors can dry out lips and damage hair too. Use Vaseline Lip Therapy (Original or Aloe Vera) or Nivea Lip Balm to keep your lips hydrated, smooth and nourished. For hair apply coconut or almond oil to your hair and scalp before stepping out. You can also massage a little oil behind your ears, on your neck, and over your forehead.

Take extra care for sensitive skin
If your skin gets irritated easily Do a patch test for any new product 2–3 days before Holi. Use mineral-based or natural color alternatives like gulaal made from flowers or turmeric-based colors. Consider wearing a thin scarf over your hair and head for added protection.

Post-Holi skin recovery
After colors, wash off gently with lukewarm water—avoid hot water as it may aggravate irritation. Use a mild cleanser, then follow up with a soothing moisturizer. After-wash care apply Aloe Vera gel, Cucumber slices, a calming lotion or oil. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes. Prefer organic or herbal colors and Hydrate well throughout the day.
