Heavy rain throws Delhi-NCR out of gear; waterlogging, traffic snarls reported across region

New Delhi: Heavy rainfall lashed Delhi-NCR on Friday and Saturday, triggering widespread waterlogging, traffic snarls and disruption to normal life across several parts of the national capital and neighbouring Faridabad.

Several areas of Delhi, including Sangam Vihar, ITO, Mathura Road, Lodhi Road, CR Park, Krishna Nagar, Lal Kuan and the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, reported severe waterlogging following incessant rain. Deep water on roads forced commuters to push vehicles through submerged stretches, while residents faced difficulties in moving around.

In Sangam Vihar, three schoolchildren reportedly fell into an overflowing drain after rainwater submerged the road and made it difficult to distinguish the drain from the street. Local residents rushed to their aid and rescued them.

The situation also raised concerns in Shaheen Bagh, where rain and drain water accumulated in a deep pit dug on the 40-foot road, reportedly resulting in an accident. Videos showed people trying to pull a scooter out of the water-filled pit, highlighting concerns over road safety and drainage.

In South Delhi's Deoli, a private parking wall collapsed after rainwater accumulated outside it, damaging dozens of cars.

Waterlogging was also reported at the Delhi Police Narcotics office in South Delhi.

Traffic movement was affected near Terminal 1 at Mehram Nagar due to severe waterlogging, while the Burari area witnessed extensive water accumulation, with several main roads reportedly submerged.

A large section of a culvert on Surajkund Road in Faridabad, between Sidhdata Ashram and MVN Road, also caved in following heavy rain.

According to PTI, more than 50 locations in Faridabad were waterlogged after the city recorded 120 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, leading to massive traffic jams and disruption to daily life.

In central Delhi, a tree collapsed on Tilak Marg near the Supreme Court, forcing authorities to close one side of the road. Traffic was diverted through a single lane.

Waterlogging was also reported on Delhi-Karnal Road-Mahatma Gandhi Marg near the rear side of the Red Fort. The water accumulation was reportedly caused by a burst Delhi Jal Board pipeline, with water pumps deployed to clear the affected stretch.

The weather also disrupted traffic at several other locations across Delhi-NCR, with commuters facing prolonged snarls as roads remained waterlogged.

The India Meteorological Department has issued yellow and orange alerts for parts of the region, forecasting further rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.

The widespread flooding once again brought the city's drainage and road infrastructure under scrutiny, with open drains, submerged roads and water-filled construction pits posing serious risks to commuters and residents.
