Neeraj Chopra wins javelin silver as Yash claims bronze; India's medal tally rises to 23

New Delhi/Glasgow: India's star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra returned to the Commonwealth Games podium with a silver medal after Sri Lanka's Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage produced a championship-winning effort to claim gold in the men's javelin final in Glasgow.

The two-time Olympic medallist registered a season-best throw of 85.83m to finish second, while compatriot Yash Vir Singh secured bronze with a personal-best 85.41m, giving India two medals in one of the marquee athletics events of the Games.

Pathirage, a former fast bowler, clinched the gold medal with a superb throw of 89.75m. Remarkably, it was the Sri Lankan's only legal throw of the competition, but it proved sufficient to keep the Indian duo behind.

The final also underlined India's growing depth in the discipline, with three Indian athletes featuring in the medal round, highlighting the country's emergence as a major force in men's javelin throw on the international stage.

The twin podium finish further boosted India's campaign in Glasgow, taking the country's overall medal tally to 23 medals comprising five gold, 12 silver and six bronze.

Athletics, along with judo and boxing, continued to contribute significantly to India's medal haul on another productive day for the contingent at the Commonwealth Games.
