New Delhi: PGDAV College ended its 27-year title drought after it defeated SGTB Khalsa College by eight wickets in the final of the Delhi University Inter-College Tournament at the SS Cricket Ground in Delhi.
The match, played on March 17, saw frayed tempers midway after Khalsa College protested over the condition of the pitch following early loss of six wickets (for 53 runs). However, the match continued and Khalsa were bowled out for 176 in 39.4 overs.
Ishdeep Singh top-scored with 76 off 83 balls (8x4s, 2x6s) and was the lone ranger.
Pace bowler Shubham Dubey took 4/35 in his eight-over spell while left-arm spinner Vaibhav Pandey also took 4/31 in as many overs.
In response, PGDAV College chased the target in 15.1 overs, losing just two wickets.
Opener Ankit Rajesh Kumar scored 118 not out off 43 balls (8x6s, 15x4s). Yash Dabas scored 48 off 37 balls.
"We are very relieved to see PGDAV winning the trophy after a gap of 27 years. We used to reach the final, but would lose to Swami Shraddhanand College. This time we have made it. Ankit played a wonderful knock while bowlers Shubham and Vaibhav did well. Shubham bowled a deadly spell," said DAV College coach Vivekanand Jha.
Ankit Kumar, who scored the match-winning century, said, "I wanted to go on the attack right from the start. I didn't score runs in the first three matches. But I scored 103 in the semifinal against Ambedkar College and 118 in the final against Khalsa.
"The pitch had a lot of turn and I had to use my feet. I tried to step out or stay back deep in my crease to play the spinners," added the 22-year-old.
PGDAV had last won the title back in 1998.
