New Delhi: Delhi BJP President Virendra Sachdeva has backed the Delhi government's decision to provide electricity connections to over 1.25 lakh properties booked for illegal construction, saying it is an unprecedented decision that the affected people of Delhi have been demanding for over a decade.

The Delhi BJP President stated that over 1.25 lakh properties in Delhi booked by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi for illegal construction are indirectly connected to 1 million families, whether residential or commercial.

“With this single decision, the Rekha Gupta government has not only opened the way for normal electricity use for millions of people in Delhi, but will also increase the electricity revenue that was previously lost due to power theft,” said Sachdeva.

She said that in September, the BJP government gave exemption in GST rates to traders, in October, it gave tax refunds, and now by providing electricity connections, it has made 2025 the year of the business.

Meanwhile, Praveen Shankar Kapoor, General Secretary of the Chandni Chowk Citizens Forum, has also welcomed the decision.

Kapoor stated that in Old Delhi alone, stretching from Delhi Gate to Sadar Bazaar, there are over 10,000 properties booked, including approximately 40,000 residential families and over 50,000 shopkeepers who were struggling to get electricity connections or were forced to use electricity illegally.

Kapoor stated that millions of Old Delhi merchants have been paying full sales tax and GST revenue since the time of Sheila Dikshit's government, but when they requested electricity or water, they were denied, calling their shops illegal.
