New Delhi: The dressing rooms at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground are due for renovation which may start very soon as the stadium gears up for the T20 World Cup to be held in India and Sri Lanka early next year.
The historic venue in Delhi had undergone renovation very recently, that is, just ahead of the 2023 Cricket (50-over) World Cup. It has not been even two years.
Sources have said that the Indian team had shown displeasure during the recent India vs West Indies Test and wanted the size of the dressing rooms to be increased as the space within was not enough to host the players and the support staff together. It should be noted that nowadays the Indian squad carries a large number of support staff. The size of the entire squad, including players, can run up to 30 people.
If the renovation begins from early November as the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) plans to do it as early as possible to meet the T20 World Cup deadline, the dressing rooms will temporarily be shifted to ground floor below the Old Club House, where they were located prior to the reconstruction of the stadium in 2004-05. Back then, the players would walk out to the ground without having the trouble to walk down the stairs.
The ground floor is where the logistics for broadcast is set up nowadays and the shifting of the dressing rooms here may mean that the Delhi-J&K match that was due to be broadcast may not be transmitted live now. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may now broadcast another game.
The Delhi and District Cricket (DDCA) secretary Ashok Sharma confirmed that the dressing rooms are due for some work.
“Yes, there is some renovation work that needs to be done in the dressing rooms. It relates to upkeep and maintenance,” said Sharma although he denied knowledge of the Indian team complaining.
“I have not heard of any complaint by the Indian team.”
However, some officials/members in the DDCA have said that the Indian team found the dressing room cramped and were not happy with them.
After facing criticism over the lack of facilities in the stadium, the DDCA had to renovate the stadium, including building new toilets and changing seating for public to ensure that it was fit for the 2023 World Cup matches.
In less than two years, it faces problems again, forcing it to spend more money, although these relate to players’ facilities.
