A new sport will be on display in the national capital when the 4th National Finswimming Championship, organised by Underwater Sports Federation Of India (USFI) in association with Physical Education Foundation of India, gets underway from November 15 at the D. Syama Prasad Mookeerjee Swimming Pool Complex in New Delhi. The event will last till November 17.

“This time in this 4th National Finswimming Championship New Delhi 2024, almost 28 state units and more than 400 districts from across India have registered for the event. More than 1500 participants will take part in 186 events and 558 medal positions will be contested in all the age categories in both genders,” said Tapan Panigrahi, Secretary, USFI, in the pre-event press conference at the International Youth Hostel.

Elaborating on Finswimming, Panigrahi said, “Finswimming is a new version of competitive swimming. It is very popular in many countries; in India USFI is seeking to popularise it. It is another excellent platform for the youth to realise their potential in competitive swimming.”

Panigrahi added, "There is a possibility that this can be added as an event at Olympics. So we are trying to build a talent pool.”

The USFI organised the First National Finswimming Championship in Ponda, Goa in 2021 where 766 athletes from 21 states participated.

The 2nd National Finswimming Championship was held at Pune’s Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in 2022, where 981 Swimmers participated.

The 3rd Nationals were held in 2023 again in Pune, where a record number of participants (1200 swimmers) participated.
