New Delhi: The ICC T20 World Cup match between Indian cricket team and Pakistan cricket team on February 15 in Colombo will be held as per schedule after the International Cricket Council (ICC), Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) reached an agreement according to which the BCB will not be penalised for opting out of the tournament after refusing to play their World Cup matches in India.

"The Government of Pakistan has reviewed the formal requests extended to the PCB by the Bangladesh Cricket Board, as well as the supporting communications from Sri Lanka, the United Arab Emirates, and other member nations. These correspondences sought Pakistan’s leadership in securing a viable solution to recent challenges," said a statement from Pakistan Cricket Board published by sections of media.

"In view of the outcomes achieved in multilateral discussions, as well as the request of friendly countries, the Government of Pakistan hereby directs the Pakistan National Cricket Team to take the field on February 15, 2026, for its scheduled fixture in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup," added the statement confirming the fixture.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Aminul Islam Bulbul wrote to the Pakistan Cricket Board, thanking their support and cooperation and also requested them to play the match against India.

“We are deeply moved by Pakistan’s efforts to go above and beyond in supporting Bangladesh during this period. Long may our brotherhood flourish. Following my short visit to Pakistan yesterday and given the forthcoming outcomes of our discussions, I request Pakistan to play the ICC T20 World Cup game on 15 February against India for the benefit of the entire cricket ecosystem," said Bulbul in a BCB statement.

Reason behind the differences

It should be noted that Bangladesh had requested the ICC to shift their matches to Sri Lanka citing security concerns after their pace bowler Mustafizur Rahman was removed from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squad for IPL 2026. The left-arm pacer was part of the KKR squad initially. The ICC refused to accept their request of a change in venue following which Bangladesh refused to travel and were replaced by Scotland.

The agreement between ICC, BCB and PCB also promises an ICC tournament in Bangladesh prior to the 2031 ICC Cricket World Cup which will be co-hosted by India and Bangladesh. Bangladesh were supposed to host the Women's T20 World Cup in 2024 but the tournament's matches were shifted to UAE following unrest in the country.

"The International Cricket Council (ICC), Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) have concluded an open, constructive and congenial dialogue. This dialogue covered several matters, including but not limited to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 and the broader outlook for cricket in South Asia," said a statement from the ICC.

"While reflecting on the Bangladesh cricket team’s unfortunate absence from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, the global governing body for cricket reaffirmed BCB's position as a valued Full Member, with a proud cricketing history and a vital role in the growth of the global game. The ICC also reiterated its continued facilitation of growth in one of cricket’s most vibrant markets, with more than 200 million passionate fans to ensure that the national team's non-participation in ICC Men's T20 World Cup does not have any long-term effects on Cricket in the country.

"It is agreed that no financial, sporting or administrative penalty will be imposed on Bangladesh Cricket Board in relation to the current matter. It is acknowledged that BCB retains the right to approach the Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC), should it choose to do so. This right exists under current ICC regulations and remains intact," the statement added.

"As part of this understanding, an agreement has been reached that Bangladesh will host an ICC event prior to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2031, subject to the usual ICC hosting processes, timelines and operational requirements," said the statement further.

"This reflects confidence in Bangladesh’s capability as a host and reinforces the ICC’s commitment to providing meaningful hosting opportunities across its membership to develop cricket in the country."
