Jewar (Uttar Pradesh): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday inaugurated the Noida International Airport, marking the addition of a major new aviation hub to the National Capital Region (NCR). The greenfield airport, located in Gautam Buddha Nagar district, is expected to enhance connectivity and support economic growth across northern India.
Capacity, cost and infrastructure
Developed under a public-private partnership model, the first phase of the project has been built at an estimated cost of around Rs 11,000–11,700 crore. The airport spans approximately 5,300 acres in total, with Phase I covering about 1,200 acres.
In its initial phase, the airport is designed to handle around 12 million passengers annually, with plans to scale up capacity to 60–120 million passengers in the long term. The infrastructure includes a 3,900-metre runway, a large passenger terminal, and dedicated cargo facilities, with provisions for multiple runways in future phases.
Officials said the airport has been planned as a major aviation and logistics hub aimed at reducing congestion at Indira Gandhi International Airport and improving regional connectivity.
Officials highlight economic and connectivity benefits
At the inauguration, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the project reflects India’s expanding infrastructure capacity and will strengthen connectivity across northern states.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described the airport as a “game changer” for western Uttar Pradesh, stating that it is expected to boost investment, generate employment, and accelerate development along the Yamuna Expressway corridor.
Government officials indicated that the airport is likely to support growth in logistics, tourism, and manufacturing, while also creating direct and indirect employment opportunities.
Part of a growing network of airports in Uttar Pradesh
The inauguration comes as Uttar Pradesh continues to expand its aviation infrastructure. The state already has multiple operational airports, including:
> Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport (Lucknow)> Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport (Varanasi)> Kushinagar International Airport (Kushinagar)> Maharishi Valmiki International Airport (Ayodhya)> Agra Airport (Agra)> Kanpur Airport (Kanpur)> Prayagraj Airport (Prayagraj)
The addition of Jewar is expected to further strengthen the state’s position as one of India’s largest aviation markets.
Concerns over utilisation of existing airports
However, the rapid expansion of airport infrastructure in the state has also drawn criticism from analysts and opposition leaders. Critics argue that several existing airports, particularly newer facilities such as Kushinagar International Airport, are operating below capacity due to limited flight connectivity and low passenger traffic.
Questions have also been raised about the commercial viability of maintaining multiple airports in relatively close proximity, especially when some continue to rely on government support and incentives to attract airlines.
Aviation experts note that while infrastructure creation has accelerated, optimal utilisation depends on sustained airline operations, passenger demand, and route viability, which remain uneven across the network.
Outlook
With the inauguration of Noida International Airport, Uttar Pradesh’s aviation footprint has expanded significantly. While the new airport is expected to ease pressure on Delhi’s existing aviation infrastructure and drive regional growth, its long-term success—like that of other airports in the state—will depend on traffic generation, airline participation, and effective integration into the broader transport network.
