One win in five games: Delhi under-19 crash out of Vinoo Mankad Trophy

Only skipper Pranav Pant could return with head held high as he made three fifties and a century as other members failed to cross 50 even once, while the bowlers failed to pick a single five-wicket haul

The Delhi under-19 team crashed out of the BCCI one-day competition for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy after losing four of their five matches in Puducherry.

Delhi could manage a win only against Manipur in their first match on October 4. Following that six-wicket win, they lost four games consecutively.

They were thrashed by Haryana by eight wickets on October 6 after putting up just 164 on the board. The Haryanvis chased the target in 44.1 overs.

In the next match on October 8, they managed to score 266 in 50 overs. However, that total was overhauled by Uttar Pradesh in 46 overs. The UP team won by five wickets.

Against Jharkhand on October 10, the side led by Golden Hawks’ player Pranav Pant folded for just 221 while chasing 246 as the opponents had made 245/7 in 49 overs.

In the rain-affected October 12 match against Gujarat, Delhi scored 186/8 in 42 overs. Gujarat in response were given a target of 194 in 42 overs and they reached it in 38.2 overs.

So poor was Delhi’s performance that barring skipper Pranav Pant, no one else could cross the half-century mark even once. No bowler could take a five-wicket haul.

Team captain Pant three half-centuries and one century in four of the five matches, failing only once. In fact, if he hadn’t played the 75-run knock off 45 balls against Manipur, Delhi may have failed to win even a single game.

Pant made 66 off 63 against Jharkhand, 56 off 58 against Haryana, 107 off 95 balls against Uttar Pradesh, besides the 75 not out against Manipur.

Neither coach Yogesh Nagar, a former Delhi player, nor chief selector Mohan Chaturvedi were available for comment on the team’s performance.
