Rohit Sharma's technique still good, failed due to impact of T20: Coach

Rohit Sharma’s childhood coach Dinesh Lad has backed the India skipper to come good and has termed the recent failures a result of too much T20 cricket.

“There is nothing wrong with his technique. He had scored centuries against England on tough pitches earlier this year. So, you cannot say that he has lost his technique against spinners suddenly,” said Lad to www.thedelhijunction.com from Mumbai.

Lad said that the players have been in T20 mould.

“He has been in T20 mould and couldn’t come out of it. That was the problem. If you see, he didn’t stay on the pitch for long. He needed to do that. He started playing shots from the word go. He needs to change that for Test cricket. These pitches required application.”

Lad asserted that Sharma’s technique against spinners is still among the best.

“I think he will do well in Australia.”

India had returned from T20 World Cup under Sharma’s captaincy as winners in late June and then in August, they went to play Sri Lanka under Sharma for an ODI series. They lost that series.

It was the first time in 27 years that Sri Lanka won a bilateral ODI series against India.

Following that, there was a gap of over a month before India played their two-Test series against Bangladesh. The first Test against Bangladesh began on September 19 and prior to that there were a few Duleep Trophy matches that provided both Sharma and Virat Kohli an opportunity to get used to multi-day format. However, both opted to not play the matches.

Sharma totalled 133 runs in 10 innings of five Test matches this season with a highest of only 52. His scores were 6, 5, 23, 8 against Bangladesh, and 2, 52, 0, 8, 18, and 11 against New Zealand.

The 37-year-old admitted that he hasn't spent too much time on the pitch.

“I haven’t defended a lot in this series because I haven’t been there much to defend. I need to spend more time to defend the ball. It has been only these two series I have not spend a lot of time on the crease. I will relook at my game.”
