India cricket team batsman Shreyas Iyer broke the record for highest bid in Indian Premier League (IPL) after he fetched 26 crore 75 lakh (Rs 26.75 crore) from Punjab Kings before Rishabh Pant bettered the mark and was picked by Lucknow Super Giants for Rs 27 crore.

Iyer had gone past Australia’s Mitchell Starc who fetched Rs 24 crore 75 lakh (24.75 crore) in the 2024 IPL auction from Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR).

Iyer started with a base price of Rs 2 crore. KKR were the first team to show interest in the right-handed batsman.

However, they faced a challenge from Punjab Kings (PBKS) early before the Delhi Capitals (DC) entered the competition and his price got raised to Rs 10 crore.

KKR then stepped aside as DC and PBKS kept fighting before the latter prevailed.

Pant also began with the base price of Rs 2 crore, and saw interest from Luknow Super Giants (LSG) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), who both fought for him before LSG picked him for the price.

Earlier, Punjab Kings exercised the Right To Match (RTM) card to get India left-arm pace bowler Arshdeep Singh for Rs 18 crore.

Arshdeep was being sought by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Delhi Capitals (DC), Gujarat Titans (GT), Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) before Punjab Kings exercise their RTM and won him.

Kagiso Rabada was picked by Gujarat Titans for Rs 10.75 crore. The Titans also acquired Jos Buttler for Rs 15.75 crore.

The left-arm Aussie pacer Starc went to Delhi Capitals for Rs 11.75 crore.
