Zunain Halim Jaffer Khan, the chief exponent and torch-bearer of the eclectic Jafferkhani Baaj, will be performing in Mysuru at the JCAC along with flautist Pandit Ravi Shankar Mishra and Pandit Gourisankar on the tabla on December 19 during the Mysuru Yoga Utsav.

The Mysuru Yoga Utsav will be held between December 18-21 2025.

The Jafferkhani Baaj is a sitar style innovated by his father and guru, Padma Bhushan Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan. Zunain Khan is a leading sitarist representing the fifth generation of the Indore Beenkar Gharana. His mastery of the Jafferkhani baaj blends with his unique creativity to produce traditional raag music with a contemporary flair.

In Zunain Khan’s performances one gets a sense of flowing through a river as one moves through the different phases of the raag.

The blending is beautifully done. His alaap and jod (prelude) feel like the beginning of a story, setting the plot, evoking intrigue, preparing the listener for more. His vilambit (slow movement) reminds one of an emotive song. The dhrut (fast movement) takes on a playful quality ending in a dynamic and energetic Jhala (watch: Raag Rageshree). The performance leaves the audiences with a very fulfilled feeling. What is particularly impressive is Zunain’s ability to be uncompromising in the traditional training he has received while also being able to reach the modern audience.

Zunain Khan has collaborated with flamenco artist Pedro Cortes on the guitar, where he fluently blended the sounds of the sitar with complex flamenco beats, at ease with the offbeats characteristic of flamenco that are also intrinsic to his music.

He has collaborated with santoor maestro Late Pandit Bhajan Sopori, also known as the ‘Saint of Santoor’ and his son, Pandit Abhay Sopori under the Sufiyana tradition.

The rendition of the famous composition Sufiyana Rang by Zunain has a soulful and beautiful quality (listen here: https://www.reverbnation.com/zunainkhan).

The fine balance of the modern with the traditional is a rare gift and takes the Jafferkhani Baaj to new heights. Zunain has much to offer and promises to keep the Indian classical music tradition alive through his arresting performance style.

So look out for Zunain Halim Jaffer Khan at JCAC in Mysuru on December 19.
