Delhi suffered a heartbreak as they went down to Mumbai in the Super Over in the pre-quarterfinals of the Senior Women’s One Day Trophy in Rajkot
Mumbai had scored 321/7 in 50 overs and in response Delhi matched the score with 321/5 in their allotted 50 overs. Delhi then managed 17 without loss in the Super Over but Mumbai chased that down on the last ball to reach 23/0 and progress to the quarterfinals.
Ayushi Soni was the top-scorer for Delhi with unbeaten 97 off 106 balls (8x4s, 1x6). She added 158 runs for the fourth wicket with skipper Laxmi Yadav (92 off 85 balls) after Delhi were struggling at 68/3 chasing 322 to win.
“It was a great partnership between me and Laxmi Yadav. We won the toss and elected to bowl. It was a batting surface and we knew that the score would go to 300. But we also knew that we would chase it easily,” said the 23-year-old Ayushi who practices at the Diwanchand Arya School behind India Habitat Centre under coach Ramesh Chopra who used to coach at the National Stadium earlier.
After Laxmi was dismissed, the right-handed Ayushi added 89 for the fifth wicket with Nazma (62 off 41 balls).
Delhi needed seven off the last six balls with five wickets in hand.
“They bowled really well in the last over to ensure we don’t go onto win.”
Delhi batted first in the Super Over and thanks to Shweta Sehrawat’s 11 off three, they reached 17/0. But Simran Shaikh made 22 off five balls from Nazma to lead Mumbai to win.
Earlier, Vrushali Bhagat’s 134 off 124 balls powered Mumbai to their eventual 321/7. Skipper Humairaa Kazi (41 off 33), wicketkeeper Riya Chaudhari (32), Ira Jadhav (33), Simran and M Dakshini (23) were the others to contribute in Mumbai’s cause.
