Lovlina needs just one win to get into gold medal round at Glasgow CWG

Glasgow, Scotland: Lovlina Borgohain, a former world champion is assured a medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as needs to just win one match to get into the gold medal round. Even if she were to be beaten in the semis she is assured of a bronze, as both semi-finalists are awarded medals.

The Assamese boxer was assured of a medal even without competing in a single round due to the limited number of boxers in her category at the Games. She along with Australia's Emma-Sue Greentree and Tuvalu's Tarona Taafaki received a bye into the semi-finals as only five competitors are set to take part in the women’s 75 kg weight category.

Lovlina leads a contingent of 14 Indian boxers at CWG 2026. The 28-year-old boxer, an Arjuna Awardee, previously delivered a bronze medal at the 2020 Olympics Games in Tokyo – she became the third Indian boxer to win a medal at the Olympics. She also won a gold medal at the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships.

Other Indians who have a good chance of landing medals include Kapil Pokhariya (men’s 90kg), Narender Berwal (men’s +90kg), Jaismine Lamboria (women’s 57kg), Priya Ghanghas (women’s 60kg), Parveen Hooda (women’s 65kg) and Arundhati Choudhary (women’s 70kg).

They will all start their journey from the quarter finals and can be sure of a medal if they were to win their opening round.
