Breaking the Barriers: Untold stories of India’s Paralympic heroes

The book describes the stories of 26 Indian athletes who have won medals at the Paralympics; a must-read for those wanting to know about the struggles that go into making champion para athletes

21 Aug, 2024

‘Breaking the Barriers’, a breakthrough book which details the inspirational experiences of all 26 Indian Paralympic medallists to far, has officially been released. The book, which was written by seasoned sportswriters Abhishek Dubey and Mahavir Rawat and released by Konark Publishers, is a substantial addition to the body of knowledge on Indian sports, especially in the underserved category of para sports.

Rawat, an ex-NDTV Sports correspondent and anchor, has been at the forefront of reporting on para sports in India. He has been appointed as the Press Attaché for the Paris 2024 Paralympics. His deep connection with the world of para athletes and his dedication to bringing their stories to the forefront is evident throughout the pages of ‘Breaking the Barriers’.

“I am very thankful to Abhishek Dubey and Konark Publishers for giving me this opportunity. It is with their support that ‘Breaking the Barriers’ could take shape. I have been very close to these para players, and it's like one big family for me. These are stories of great inspiration and determination, and I hope everyone reads and gets inspired,” said Rawat at the launch event.

The book has already garnered praise from some of the country’s leading para athletes. Sumit Antil, a Paralympic gold medallist, expressed his admiration for the work, stating, “There are very few journalists who have covered the life and struggles of para athletes. I have known Rawat for seven years, and like me, he has closely watched the journey of many para athletes. I hope people read this book to understand our athletes and the people who have shaped these champions.”

Para athlete Deepa Malik with the book, 'Crossing the Barriers'

Deepa Malik, another prominent figure in Indian para sports, also praised the book, saying, “This is the first book on para athletes. Some stories about other athletes are very new to me too. Mahavir Rawat and Abhishek Dubey have been at the forefront of the para movement in the country, and I am sure ‘Breaking the Barriers’ will be a scintillating and inspiring read for everyone.”

‘Breaking the Barriers’ is not just a book but a tribute to the indomitable spirit of India’s Paralympic athletes. It sheds light on their struggles, triumphs, and the people who have supported them on their journey to greatness. As one of the few books dedicated to the winners of the Paralympic Games for India, it stands as an essential read for anyone interested in sports, resilience, and the power of human determination.

The foreword of this book has been penned by the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Yogi Adityanath.
