The Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) is eyeing a massive profit in the range of Rs 40 crore from the upcoming Delhi Premier League (DPL).
The tournament, which is the franchise-based T20 league of the Delhi cricket body, will begin on August 2 and conclude on August 31. The matches wll be played at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground of the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
According to sources, the DDCA is looking at a revenue of over Rs 80 crore. This includes the annual fees to be paid by the eight franchises – including the two new ones, which will come to just less than Rs 70 crore. Apart from that, their will be income from sponsorships and other things to the tune of Rs 10-12 crore.
“The DDCA is keeping a cap on the expenditure to the tune of Rs 45 crore. This includes an amount of Rs 28 crore earmarked for the event management company to run the tournament, Rs 5 crore in prize money – which will be an increase from Rs 4.25 crore given out last year and Rs 12 crore in other expenditure including catering. This will lead to a profit of around Rs 40 crore,” said an official aware of the discussions.
Such a huge amount of income will reflect a resounding success and be a shot in the arm for the dispensation at DDCA under President Rohan Jaitley, which has taken a lot of initiative including raising the subsidy to clubs, providing platform for women cricketers and the introduction of DPL.
“The inaugural edition of DPL was a success but the DDCA could not save much – the profit from DPL 2024 is estimated to be around Rs 5-6 crore (the balance sheet is yet to come). But this time they are ensuring better returns and that is good for the health of Delhi cricket.”
There will be 43 men’s matches and seven women’s matches in the tournament. Two additional franchises -- the Outer Delhi Warriors and New Delhi Tigers --- have joined the league that already included East Delhi Riders, South Delhi Superstarz, North Delhi Strikers, West Delhi Lions, Central Delhi Kings and Puraani Dilli 6. The women's competition will feature four teams like last year -- Central Delhi Queens, North Delhi Strikers, South Delhi Superstarz and East Delhi Riders.
