Delhi impressive run in the Under-19 Women’s One-Day Trophy ended with a heartbreak after they lost to Uttar Pradesh (UP) in the quarterfinals by five wickets in Puducherry.

Delhi batted first but could score only 162/9 in 50 overs. Armeet Kaur, who scored 70 runs off 118 balls (6x4s, 2x6s), was the top-scorer. Armeet finished with 429 runs in the tournament with two hundreds and a fifty, an average of 85.8.

Besides her, however, the batting failed in the quarterfinal and the team’s bowlers could not defend the total. Purva made 31 not out off 28 balls towards the end.

Supriya Arela (3/30) and Bhumi Singh (2/16) were the top wicket-takers for UP.

If Delhi had any hopes of putting up a fight, these were dashed after openers Rama Kushwah (51 off 64) and Shashi Balan (32 off 51) added 90 runs for the first wicket in 18.5 overs.

Delhi got a glimmer of hope when they managed to take three wickets for two runs in five balls but then they got stuck into Bhumi Singh, who took the team closer to the victory.

Despite the strong start, UP could get to the target in 39 overs. A few more runs from the Delhi batters would have helped them make a match of it.

Nishika Singh, who could score only one, finished the series with 302 runs at an average of 75.5.

While Armeet is currently placed second in the list of run-getters, Nishika is sixth.

Among bowlers, off-spinner Mahi Chauhan is 11th with 12 scalps.
