A day before the Delhi Capitals-Mumbai Indians Indian Premier League (IPL) match, only one net bowler was used by the Mumbai Indians (MI) team.

That lucky boy turned out to be 16-year-old Pradyuman Sanan. The right-arm pace bowler, on the fringes of Delhi age-group teams, was asked to bowl at the MI batsmen after being summoned by the franchise.

“I know this kid from before as a talented young pace bowler. He was around and got the opportunity. I wanted to have him get the feel of IPL batsman,” said Paras Mhambrey, the MI bowling coach.

Pradyuman bowled at Will Jacks and Corbin Bosch for about three overs. There were other bowlers who couldn’t get an opportunity as MI management wanted their batsmen to face either throwdowns or their squad’s fast bowlers, who play top-flight cricket.

“I got to bowl for a long time, around three overs. Paras [Mhambrey] sir said that I bowled well,” said Pradyuman about his experience. His stint only ended when MI skipper Rohit Sharma walked into bat. He only wanted to face throwdowns from the side-arm.

The right-arm pace bowler has just returned from playing the DY Patil T20 tournament and rubbed shoulders there with the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar among others.

This experience should help him go a long way.

“This was a great opportunity for him. He is tall, hit-the-deck, and bowls good line and length. He will get better. The more he plays cricket, the stronger he will get. The bounce he will get will also help him. He will get stronger. He has the ability to hit the deck hard. Just wanted to see him bowling at the nets,” said Mhambrey, whose team registered a 12-run come-from-behind victory over Delhi Capitals at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground inside a packed Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday night.

Mhambrey said his performance in DY Patil T20 tournament will hold him in good stead.

“He had a good tournament. Picked up wickets. For a kid who is playing, it (DY Patil T20) was a good chance to interact with Bhuvi. Getting matches is very critical for a young player.”

Pradyuman, who will turn 17 in a couple of days, is pushing for a spot in Delhi’s under-19 team.
