New Delhi: Shyam Lal College defeated SGTB Khalsa College 7-1 in the final of the men's section of the 5th Baba Deep Singh Hockey Tournament at the Khalsa College grounds on Tuesday. The tournament featured colleges from Delhi University,

The men's final was not as one sided as the scoreline suggested. Lack of finishing hurt the home team as they made repeated forays but failed to net the ball. Shyam Lal College, on the other hand, were on the money as they did not squander any chance.

Nand Kishore started the rout, scoring in the 11th minute through a penalty corner in what was the team's first goal. Naveen, in the 19th minute, and Pankaj, in the 22nd minute, followed suit also through penalty corners.

Down by three goals and trying to urgently bring themselves back, Khalsa tried to up the ante. But in doing that, they allowed the opposition to exploit the holes in the defence. As a result of that, Shyam Lal started pumping in field goals. Pratyush then scored field goals in the 30th and 40th minutes. Those two goals made the score 5-0.

Rushil scored one for Khalsa in the 48th minute to reduce the margin which became 5-1.

However, it was too late. Shyam Lal College pumped in two more goals towards the end -- in the 59th minute through a field goal from Manmohan and in the 60th minute through another field goal by Pankaj.

"Last year, we had lost in the shootout in the final and ended up being the runners-up to Khalsa College. We had been losing the final for the past two years. The focus this time was to win the final. The whole team worked hard. Nobody played selfishly," said Shyam Lal skipper Himanshu Lohia.
