New Delhi: Former President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and International Hockey Federation (IHF) Narinder Batra has lashed out at PT Usha, the current President of the IOA, for allowing disrespect to late Suresh Kalmadi, the former IOA President and architect of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

"It has not gone unnoticed that the IOA AGM was scheduled to coincide with the prayer meeting of late Shri Suresh Kalmadi. Such timing conveys, at best, indifference and, at worst, a deliberate disregard for basic human sensitivity," wrote Batra to Usha, the details of which was shared with the media.

"Public office carries with it an obligation of restraint and grace. Speaking ill of those who have departed this world reflects poorly not on them, but on the moral compass of those who indulge in such conduct," added Batra in the letter.

He further hit out at Vengalil Sreenivasan, Usha's husband, for showing lack of civility by uttering harsh words for Kalmadi.

"I seek clarity on whether Vengalil Sreenivasan bears any personal or professional proximity to you. If he does, it would be prudent for you to rein him in and ensure that minimum standards of civility and respect are maintained, especially when referring to the departed.

"There is an old Hindi proverb - often recalled in moments of irony - suggesting that one’s worldview is shaped by one’s own disposition. Recent utterances compel one to reflect on its relevance. It is hoped that those occupying the highest positions in Indian sport will demonstrate maturity, wisdom, and dignity, rather than personal animosity and intemperate conduct."
