Indian boxers continue march to medals; five men and all seven women have medal chance

Glasgow, Scotland: The boxers could be the toast of the Indian contingent as a majority of them are just one bout away from a medal. Five of the seven men boxers and all seven women have entered quarters and beyond at this stage of the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Late on Monday, three Indian boxers entered the quarters and came one step closer to a medal -- Sachin Siwach in the men’s 60 Kg division, Ankush in the men’s 80 kg division and Sakshi Chaudhary in women’s 51 kg division.

Sachin put together an impressive bout as he edged out William Hewitt of England with a 4 to 1 split decision in his favour. Sachin comes into the Commonwealth Games as a medal hopeful. He had an impressive youth career where he secured several international medals including gold at the South Asian games in 2019, gold at the Commonwealth Youth Games in 2017 and gold at the Youth World Championships in 2016.

His Round of 16 opponent William had pulled off a shock victory over Olympic silver medallist Munarbek Seiitbek Uulu of Kyrgyzstan despite being a late pick for the English team after Jack Dryden had to withdraw due to injury.

Ankush and Sakshi came up dominant performances in their divisions as both boxers dominated their opponent to secure a unanimous 5 to 0 decision to progress into the quarterfinals. Ankush in the men’s 80 kg division beat Zalaan Jan of Antigua. Ankush comes into the Games this year having won the Silver medal at the World Boxing Cup in 2025.

Sakshi was paired up against Lethabo Modukanele of Botswana in the 51 kg division. Lethabo was one of the medal hopefuls for Botswana at the Commonwealth Games this year. The 29-year-old, known for her aggressive boxing style and ability to trade blows in close range with taller opponents, had previously secured the Bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in the minimum weight division and a Bronze medal at the 2022 African Championship in the 48 kg division.

Sakshi is one of the Indian boxers expected to challenge for a medal as she comes into the Commonwealth Games having already won the Gold earlier this year at 56th Grand Prix Ústí nad Labem 2026 in the 51 kg division. She is also a Gold medal winner at the World Boxing Cup in 2025 in the 54 kg division as well as a two time AIBA Youth World Boxing Champion.

Sumit Kundu lost his Round of 16 bout to Jon McConnell of Northern Ireland after a split judge decision of 4 to 1 following a tie-break countback. The 24-year-old Indian boxer took part in the 70 kg men’s division and had come into the Commonwealth Games having claimed the Gold medal at the Khelo India Games back in 2018.

On Tuesday evening, when it is late into the night in India, as many five boxers will figure in quarterfinal bouts.

The Indian boxers engaged in their quarterfinal matches include Preeti Pawar against Nicole Clyde of Northern Ireland in the women’s 54 kg division; Priya Ghanghas against Niamh Mitchell of Scotland in the Women’s 60 kg division, while Parveen Hooda takes on Sacha Hickey of England in Women’s 65 kg Division.

Jadumani Singh Mandengbam takes on Mwengo Mwale of Zambia in Men’s 55 kg Division and Kapil Pokhariya will meet Robert McNulty of Scotland in Men’s 90 kg division.
