A day after defeating Gujarat by a resounding margin of nine wickets, Delhi lost to Maharashtra by a slender margin of nine runs in the BCCI Women’s U-23 One-Day Trophy.

Maharashtra had posted 314/8 in 50 overs with openers Ishwari Awasare (126) and KN Mulla (116) scoring centuries. The duo put on 235 for the first wicket and were separated in the 33rd over.

Delhi kept picking wickets after that but somehow Maharashtra managed to cross 300. Sumiti Soni was the pick of the Delhi bowlers taking 3/62 while Madhu and skipper Tanisha Singh took two wickets each.

Delhi, in response, were restricted to 305/7 in 50 overs. Openers Pragya Rawat (41) and Upasana Singh (88) added 82 for the first wicket before Upasana added 106 for the second wicket with Tanisha Singh (79).

When the two were separated at the fall of Upasana’s wicket, Delhi needed 127 in 108 balls. While they tried, the batters fell short by nine runs.

In an earlier game, Delhi had walloped Gujarat by nine wickets.

Gujarat were dismissed for 80 in 28.5 overs. Bharti Rawal picked 5/14 in nine overs while Madhu took 2/11 in five overs.

Delhi reached the 81-run target in 20 overs with opener and wicketkeeper-batter Pragya Rawat top-scoring with unbeaten 40.

Delhi are second in Group C with eight points from three matches. They had beaten Bengal by 214 runs in the first match. They next play Nagaland and then Puducherry.
