The only recent example of father and son playing together in a match that comes to mind is of Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Tagenarine Chanderpaul, who batted together for Guyana Jaguars in a West Indies domestic 50-over match for the Super50 Cup in 2018.
But on Monday, 28-year-old Parampreet Singh and his 53-year-old father Parvinder Singh took field together for Radhey Shyam Cricket Club in a DDCA Hot Weather Tournament match against Three Star Cricket Club at the Modern School Ground 2. The duo have been playing together for some time now for their club.
While the right-hander Parampreet opened the innings and scored 150 off 76 balls (18x4s, 8x6s), Parvinder Singh could only make a duck at No. 3. Radhey Shyam scored 267 in 35 overs. Three Star were bowled out for 236 in 38 overs with Vansh Anand scoring 85. Sambhav Tyagi picked 5/45 and Parvinder 2/40 for Radhey Shyam Cricket Club.
"He picked cricket after watching me play. He played DDCA League cricket when he was as young as 10," says Parvinder about his son.
Parampreet has been a bit unlucky. He was picked among Delhi's probables for Ranji Trophy, one-dayers and T20s in the 2013-14 season as the squad was declared late, in January, following high-octane elections that pitted late Arun Jaitley against late Bishan Singh Bedi for DDCA Presidency.
He found his name in the 45-member list alongside the likes of Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Ishant Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Unmukt Chand among others.
Quite surprisingly, that very same year, he wasn't even picked for the Delhi under-19 squad. He was a batsman who bowled off-spin then. Now he bowls seam-up like his father.
Parampreet Singh
This wasn't the first time he has been given the boot.
"I remember taking him to an under-14 state match at Palam Vihar. There was rain and the match was delayed. But just before the match began, the manager came and told me that Parampreet will sit out and another player will be drafted in. The player who replaced him fell for a duck," says Parvinder. Parampreet showed his potential on April 7 in a DDCA League Elite 2 match against Canara Bank at the Ramjas Sports Complex, hammering 271 not out off 145 balls (27x4s, 21x6s). His knock, just 14 short of Naman Wason's DDCA League record of 285 made in June, 2023, took Radhey Shyam Club to 380/2 in 40 overs and helped score a massive 259-run win.
Currently, Parampreet is a manager at a gym in Gurgaon (Gurugram).
"He plays shots around the wicket. He is a hard-hitting batsman. But he has been unfortunate not to get state matches," says father Parvinder, who bowls military-medium pace and is a coach at the Dwarka Sports Complex (sector 17) and was earlier posted in Sector 11.
"I am fond of coaching," says Parvinder.

In another match, off-spinner Prince's 4/34 and fifties from batsmen Aarush Malhotra (63 not out), Agamjyot Singh (54 not out) and Karan Garg (57) helped Anand Sports beat Indo Club by nine wickets at the Chhattar Singh Stadium.
Brief scores: Indo Club 174/9 in 35 overs (Himanshu Vashishtha 57, Naman 50, Prince 4/34, Harshit Malhotra 2/25) lost to Anand Sports 180/1 in 21 overs (Aarush Malhotra 63 not out, Agamjyot Singh 54 not out, Karan Garg 57)
Meanwhile, at the Shivaji College Ground, Vinay Kumar's 4/14 helped Roop Nagar beat Century CC by 24 runs after the match was reduced to 20 overs a side.
