Mayank Gusain and wicketkeeper-batsman Krish Yadav saved Delhi under-23 team the blushes, helping them stay in contention in the Col CK Nayudu Trophy.
Gusain scored 177 while Yadav made 184 as the duo added 305 for the sixth wicket against Goa in the third match of the season.
Goa had scored 337 in the first innings in Porvorim and Delhi were struggling at 106/5 and facing the threat of conceding a lead. They had lost the previous match against Uttar Pradesh even though they had taken an 88-run first innings lead.
“We have had some decent performances and are placed third on the points table,” said Shankar Saini, the Delhi U-23 coach.
“But we need to win the next three matches to stay in contention as only the top two teams enter the knockout stage.”
Goa made 251 in the second innings to thwart Delhi’s attempt of scoring an outright win. The Hardik Sharma-led side had scored 489/9 declared in the first innings to take a 152-run lead.
Delhi couldn’t close out the match against Jammu and Kashmir, conceding 297 to No. 3 batsman Musaif Ajaz as the visitors made 482/8 declared.
Delhi play Gujarat next in Ahmedabad.
“We have managed to take lead on every occasion but somehow the Uttar Pradesh game went out of our hands. That cost us dear.”
